Nine Feng Shui Tips for the Teen
by Master Jenny T. Liu, M.A.
Monday, August 18, 2008

As your teen heads back to school, this is a good time to talk to them about recreating their bedroom to match their new phase in life. Creating a room with good feng shui will help them define themselves and how they will reach their goals.

  1. Orientation. Based on your teen’s birth date, consult a feng shui master to find out what orientation matches them for scholarship. Making sure your teen is in a compatible orientation allows for good judgment, health and relationships.

  2. Natural Air and Light. A dim, musty room is conducive of depression, allergies, and reinforces the dark side of a teen’s character. Open the curtains during the day to allow purifying sunlight to come in and keep the window ajar for air circulation.

  3. Avoid clutter. A tight space does not allow for clarity and expansion, which can cause lack of motivation and ambition in your teen. Remove unnecessary shelves and sofas that can become clutter catchers; and electronic equipment that can provide distraction.

  4. Do not invite temptation. Unless your teen is planning on becoming a rock star, film producer, actor or model, highly sexual or violent posters can affect your teen subconsciously and trigger precocious or aggressive behavior, as they are curious at this time of their life. Even seemingly harmless images of racecars, motorcycles, fashion pages can encourage life in the fast lane depending on how impressionable your teen is.

  1. Desk position. If the bedroom is to be used seriously as a place of study, the desk needs to be large enough, cleared of unnecessary items, and ideally placed so that there is a solid wall behind the chair. The bedroom door ideally to their upper left. This configuration allows them to have command, confidence and support.

  2. Bed position. There should be a solid wall at the headboard for protection and support. There should not be exposed beams overhead, and the bed shouldn’t be aligned with a bathroom door or their bedroom door. Avoid protruding corners or negative images/items such as a sword or gun pointed directly toward their bed.

  3. Color. Use colors that promote your teen based on his/her birth chart to balance their energies.

  4. Art. Place art that reinforces and inspires your teen’s interests. For example, if you have a musician in the making, place beautiful art of their instrument, their favorite scores, images of their role models and special Chi Art with blessings for fame and achievement around them. Have them make a collage of their dream school and career.

  5. Praise Achievement. Create a wall, shelf, or corner where your teen’s awards, trophies, and schoolwork are displayed, along with photos of supportive family, friends and teachers.

This September, give your child more than school supplies; give them the gift of self-cultivation through feng shui.
